TY Danjuma, Nigeria Killings and the silence of BBC and CNN.

Mainstream Media No Coverage Nigeria Killings

While Florida students get the international solidarity they deserve, Nigerians are left to die like chicken without coverage by the western mainstream media.

The killings going on in Nigeria has reached an epidemic scale that would usually warrant full coverage by western mainstream media. At least the CNN and BBC, the two most popular news networks in Africa by now must have notice the daily massacre of farmers, pedestrians, women and children by terrorist herdsmen.

Look at the homepage of BBC World/Africa, and CNN International/Africa, there is nothing to indicate that Nigeria is in crisis. However no day passes here without a report of herdsmen killing, and not even armed security personals are beyond their reach.

I can understand the need for these networks to focus on important issues, but if Nigerian lives are not important enough then we Nigerians are in trouble.

For the million reasons CNN and BBC chose to avoid these killings in Nigeria, the loud voice of TY Danjuma; a former Defense Minister – calling Nigerians to defend themselves against their OWN MILITARY – should have raised enough dust to perturb even a deaf and dumb.

Since a gunman shot and killed 17 people in a Florida high school over a month ago, more than 100 Nigerians have been killed by herdsmen, and that’s my modest estimate for lack of record. Yet, to this day the Florida case continue to get international recognition due to constant coverage by the mainstream media.

While Florida students get the international solidarity they deserve, Nigerians are left to die like chicken without coverage by the western mainstream media.

For all the reasons the mainstream media has avoided reporting on the killings fields of Nigeria, for the fact that a Military General has come out and openly accuse the Nigerian Armed Forces of complicity in the killing of Nigerians, this alone should be enough reason for coverage of this issue.

There is no point in waiting until our populace are decimated before CNN, BBC, and indeed the mainstream media begin investigating and reporting on these killings.
